As always, Jasen and I didn't get to all of our subjects during our weekly talk on WAKR 1590 (normally on at 1:30 PM). So for all of my big fans (mom, dad, and the other 3 of you) I'll start posting the "off-air" items we didn't get to.
1. Tiger Woods is no longer Tiger Woods and we all need to be ok with that. He opened with a 77 and will more then likely bounce back tonight (I'm guessing a 71), but he is just a normal golfer now. Heck, his world ranking is...get ready for this...666th. I mean, there are worse numb....no there isn't. I don't expect him to dominate (or even make every cut) ever again. But he will have a good week or two for a the next 10 years and tack a couple more "W's".
2. We didn't get to the golf tip of the week....but it was a short and sweet one. Coming out of the winter I urge everyone to cut 20-30% off the FEEL of your size of swing. Trust me. You can send me Starbucks gift cards as a thank you for the added distance and accuracy. John Rahm hit a drive 350 yards today in Phoenix and he didn't take the club anywhere near parallel. I know he is younger then you, stronger then you, but he is proof positive that you don't need a long swing to hit the ball long.
3. PGA Show Hot List. I talked to several of my fellow PGA Professionals who attended the annual merchandise show in Orlando and they had talked about these products.
- Power Tee - Automatically tees up your ball for you at the range. Pro: might allow someone with a bad back to practice a bit more. Con: goodbye to your wedge game.
- Cobra F7 Single-Length Irons - Irons that are all one length like Bryson DeChambeau plays. I like the concept and look forward to trying them, but I think closing the gap in iron length (maybe 1/4 inch instead of 1/2 inch) would have more traction.
- Birdie Ball Putting Greens- nothing new here, but they are gaining some traction in the market place. We've all had the inexpensive putting green in our basement....it's time to spoil yourself with a Birdie Ball Putting Green.
4. Akron area Tour Star Ryan Armour finished T-39 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Tiger, DJ, J-Day, and Jimmy Walker missed the cut....so that is pretty cool
