I must warn you….I'm may gush over John Rahm's swing in a bit. I've dabbled in the world of poetry. Ask my wife and she'd tell you I "used" to be romantic. John's swing makes we want to bust out a sonnet about short backswings and bowed left wrists.
Something like…"the club longs for parallel, but in it's heart it knows it needs it not. His wrist's desire is to cup, but to hit a draw it must not."
Like I said, dabbled.
The Farmers Insurance Open is about the most excited I've been for a tournament since the Ryder Cup. A full, star-studded field, courses that I've played (always fun to watch), and Tiger back in action on the PGA Tour. However, the star-studded field turned about to be a bit star-dudded when Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Jimmy Walker all missed the cut. Apparently golf's hard. Tiger missed the cut as well, but there were some moments. Some good, some bad….but moments. I do think if he would have asked a winner from a Drive, Chip, and Putt qualifier to drive for him he probably would have made the cut. Well maybe not "probably"…I'd lean more towards "likely". He hit 4 of 14 fairways on the South course on Thursday which does makes his 76 look much better. The Big Cat needs to figure the Big Stick out.
But back to John…which coincidently, in the amount of time it takes me to type "John", he could hit three tee shots. His swing is that short and that fast. I'd swear he is one of my beginner student whom I'm trying to teach how to swing forward and not down. I love it. His size of swing is something every golfer should take note of. Maybe not emulate exactly, but perhaps serve as a revelation that you don't need to put the clubhead in your left pocket to bomb the ball. His swing is the definition of compact without being compact (write that down and think about it later). I have no doubt his length of swing will not be indicative to the length of his stint on the PGA Tour as the kid obviously has game, but I'm not buying that he is the next superstar.
Speaking of superstars, Tiger is playing in Dubai, the PGA Tour is in action at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and I'm entertaining the idea of hitting balls this week. Needless to say, it's going to be another great week in golf.
